So some university President posed for a photograph with a kid dressed up like a suicide bomber.
Apparently, this is considered a bad thing.
Though Halloween (or, as it could easily be called these days, "Night of the Cat Suit") has become an alcohol-fueled night for normals to spend one evening a year as cosplayers, it used to be about dressing up as things that are scary.
That's a dilution of its earlier purposes, which was to connect the living world with the world of the dead, in both positive ways (to acknowledge death, in the form of slaughtering livestock, as the natural, inevitable, sacred end of life) and negative ways (to ward off the influence of harmful beings).
Personally, I think the seemingly recent addition of sexy women in sexy costumes is just another extension of the whole Halloween jive, by embracing sex (you know, as the squishy celebration of life it is) as the traditional beginning of life.
I digress. The President of the University of Whatever is posing with a guy who dressed up as a suicide bomber. He's dressing up as a suicide bomber because they're fucking scary. He might have also meant it in ironically (since the guy who wore it is himself of Middle Eastern descent), and it works that way, too. I'm all for making fun of scary things.
So anyway, a suicide bomber costume is not only scary, but it's pretty funny, too.
Isn't that what Halloween is about?
Oh, and sex, too. Well, Mrs. President covered that, too, if you have a thing for princesses or something.
